Santa Cruz Bullitt 2025 Review: Riding like in a bike park - again and again!

The Bullitt is like a downhill bike with a built-in chairlift. Its predecessor, like few other Santa Cruz e-MTBs, won the hearts of countless downhill and enduro fans. A force to be reckoned with downhill and very close to the downhill legend V10, the Bullitt also impressed with surprisingly good uphill performance.

The new Santa Cruz Bullitt 2025 aims to make the bike even better. To achieve this, the Americans have dared to tackle their most sacred element – the legendary VPP rear suspension system.

You read that right: The new Bullitt 2025 comes with a four-bar linkage (Horst-Link) for the first time and does many other things differently as well. It also features the Bosch Performance Line CX motor, already familiar from the Santa Cruz Vala .

We extensively tested the new 2025 Santa Cruz Bullitt in the X0 AXS RSV and GX AXS versions on our home trails in Freiburg and the Palatinate region. What did we notice about the new motor and rear suspension? And why will the new Santa Cruz Bullitt – despite its radical departure from its previous look – make so many enduro and downhill fans happy? We'll reveal all in our two-cycle test.

Key data at a glance

  • Suspension travel:
    170 / 170 mm

  • Weight:
    21.95 kg (Carbon CC)

  • Wheel size:
    MX / 29 x 27.5"

  • Motor & battery:
Bosch Performance Line CX 600 Wh

  • Santa Cruz Bullitt 2025 First Impression: VPP becomes a four-bar linkage à la Santa Cruz

First things first: Yes, there's an elephant in the room – and it's called the rear suspension. Anyone who thinks of Santa Cruz mountain bikes inevitably pictures the Virtual Pivot Point (VPP) system – after all, it defined the bikes' design for years. But that's all over with the new 2025 Bullitt from Santa Cruz.
The reason for the change? The new Bosch motor. Due to its design, optimal rear suspension function with VPP wouldn't have been possible. So instead of making a poor compromise, the folks at Santa Cruz chose a completely new approach – opting for the Horst Link and against the familiar and beloved Twin Link rear suspension for the new version of their popular e-mountain bike.

  • Horst Link debut in the Santa Cruz Bullit 2025

Is that really a Santa Cruz? You'll likely encounter this or a similar question. Just like with the Santa Cruz Vala, the new (Horst-Link) four-bar linkage on the new Bullitt is turning heads. The VPP-typical frame triangle is a thing of the past on the new Bullitt. The cool thing is: even with this new approach, the Bullitt still comes across as very well-thought-out and "grown-up." However, the typical "brand look" is gone.

  • The geometry of the new 2025 Santa Cruz Bullitt

Top news: The Californians have taken the feedback from many smaller riders to heart and are now offering the bike in size S for the first time. The Santa Cruz Bullitt comes in five different sizes (S, M, L, XL, XXL). The head tube angle is a very downhill-friendly 63.3° (Lo) . The effective seat tube angle is a comfortable 78.3° (Lo) , and the bottom bracket height is 342 mm in the low setting . The reach (size L) is 480 mm and the stack is 640 mm .

An interesting and clever solution: Like the Vala, the new Santa Cruz Bullitt 2025 features two flip chips . This allows riders to individually adjust the head angle and rear suspension progression . Typical of Santa Cruz: The chainstay length is adjusted separately for each frame size to ensure consistent performance for all riders.
Here, the Americans are deliberately going the extra mile for their customers.

  • The workmanship, protection, and frame quality are completely convincing.

As is typical of the brand, the frame is of absolutely high quality. Everything appears seamless and impresses even under close scrutiny with a magnifying glass.
Cool: The new Santa Cruz Bullitt also gets the popular Shuttle-Guard downtube protector , which will please more than just pickup-truck mountain bikers. The generous chainstay protector would probably even protect a wild Fred.
It can withstand flint. Needless to say, it nips chain noise in the bud .

Speaking of noise: The Santa Cruz Bullitt also performs flawlessly when it comes to cable routing. Another useful feature we appreciated: The mini-fender on the lower seat tube protects the rear triangle and stays from rocks and other hard debris, preventing the Bullitt from unintentionally becoming a nutcracker. The only point of criticism, for which Santa Cruz isn't really responsible, is the rubber cover of the Bosch charging port. Don't get me wrong, it fits very well. But visually, it doesn't look entirely well-thought-out and is more reminiscent of a compromise from the development department. So, dear Swabians, you're welcome to improve this.

Bosch Performance Line CX in the Bullitt: Best of friends!

Bam! Just like with the Vala, the Americans have opted for the brand-new Bosch Performance Line CX motor of the 5th generation for the new Bullitt, rather than Shimano – a smart move! The motor from Swabia not only impresses on paper with 85 Nm of torque and a maximum output of 600 watts – it is also significantly quieter than its Shimano predecessor in the old Bullitt – without sacrificing efficiency or power.

  • Nicely integrated into the frame: the new Bosch motor

Another striking feature is how well the Americans have integrated the new Bosch motor into the frame. While its predecessor with the Shimano EP801 motor was immediately recognizable as an e-MTB , this isn't quite so obvious with the new Bullitt 2025. It's not exactly an "undercover" light e-MTB , but we were instantly impressed by its overall silhouette.

  • New and smart: The Bosch Flow App

As with many bikes these days, the software plays a significant role in the new Bosch drive system. The Bosch Flow app not only allows for custom ride modes but also performs updates completely wirelessly. It also features route planning functions, including navigation. In our test, the app ran very smoothly on the iPhone. The clear highlight for us: the personalized ride modes, which allow you to precisely adapt the motor to your riding style, going beyond the "normal" modes.

  • Decent power: 600 Wh battery

With a 600 Wh battery capacity, the Bullitt e-mountain bike strikes the perfect balance between low weight and ample range. The Bosch PowerTube battery is integrated into the downtube, which should be considered when charging.
The most important question: Is 600 Wh enough for everyday use? We think so. The bike is surprisingly efficient. So, unless you're constantly bombing up mountains in radical Boost mode, the capacity will be more than sufficient. In our case, we were able to tackle trails and climbs for an entire afternoon (with medium support) and still had plenty of charge left at the end of the day.

  • Natural driving feel – more than enough power

The new Bosch motor impresses on uphill climbs with a very natural and consistently predictable riding feel . The drive system always has more than enough power in reserve, even on steep ascents. Our test repeatedly demonstrated how accurately and quickly the motor responds to inputs. While the DJI Avinox offers even more power, the control and power delivery of the Bosch Performance Line CX are excellent.

The features and model variants of the new 2025 Santa Cruz Bullitt

Santa Cruz Bullitt 2025 on the trail: Holy grenade!

Now for the most important part: How does the Bullitt ride? To find out, we put the bike through its paces for many days on our local trails in Freiburg and at the Santa Cruz test event in the Palatinate region. From grumpy root carpets and challenging rock gardens to steep descents, the new 2025 Santa Cruz Bullitt was put through its paces.

The Santa Cruz Bullitt uphill: A downhill bike on an uphill climb

What sounds like something a bodybuilder would do free climbing actually works surprisingly well thanks to the geometry and the Bosch motor. The rider sits comfortably upright and relaxed on the bike. Despite the 170 mm of suspension travel and the high front end, it climbs steeper inclines safely to the summit.

We were very impressed by the natural, predictable, yet powerful responsiveness of the Bosch Performance Line CX motor. Steering and pedaling inputs are always translated quickly enough – it's not an XC racer – so you can easily ride longer tours on the Bullitt. We didn't need the optional Bosch PowerMore 250 range extender during our test. Overall, the Bullitt is very comfortable uphill.

Santa Cruz Bullit 4 auf dem Trail

The Santa Cruz Bullitt on the downhill: Steep is awesome!

With its new suspension, it feels wonderfully planted on the trail. The rougher and more challenging the descent, the more at home the new Bullitt seems . It integrates the rider perfectly with the bike. The high front end inspires confidence, even on steep climbs. On challenging and very steep descents, it provides a great deal of security . The suspension remains in complete control in every situation.

We were generally amazed at how brilliantly the Americans tuned the new four-bar linkage. The bike feels incredibly planted on the trail. The 2025 Santa Cruz Bullitt feels like it offers plenty of travel in flat-rate mode without sacrificing the necessary support during very aggressive maneuvers. It's reminiscent of the qualities and talents of the excellent Santa Cruz V10 downhill bike model—but with significantly greater everyday usability.

The bike actively engages during aggressive descents, encouraging riders to keep the brakes open for a few extra seconds even in the most demanding conditions. The mullet wheelset (MX) makes the bike wonderfully agile . The Bullitt is easily controlled and balanced, allowing for plenty of jumps and other aerial maneuvers.

So, the perfect bike for everything? Not quite.

On flat terrain and less fast trails or smoother flow trails, it's less agile than the Vala . Here, it's definitely too much bike. But those who enjoy downhill-style trails and challenging descents will absolutely love the Bullitt's character.

Conclusion on the Santa Cruz Bullit 2025: Bullit for my Valentine

Even more planted than the Santa Cruz Vala , yet almost as agile. With the new Bullitt , the Californians have truly hit the mark. It's the perfect bike for all downhillers and die-hard enduro racers, as well as bike park enthusiasts who don't have a park nearby. The Bullitt completely redefines the concept of downhill in the e-MTB segment. Anyone who liked its predecessor will love the new 2025 Santa Cruz Bullitt . The new Bosch motor, the cool app, and the highly capable rear suspension make it a real downhill powerhouse. However, riders who prefer flow trails and less challenging descents will be happier with the Santa Cruz Vala . It's significantly more tour-friendly.
